The government introduced attainment targets and levels with the national curriculum in 1988.

The new national curriculum was published in 2014 and in September 2015 the national curriculum levels stopped being used for statutory assessments. Every school in the country were left to develop their own approach to measure and report their ongoing assessments. The staff agreed on the terminology used and we have provided pictorial representation for each of the stages. These posters are displayed in every class. The terminology used in the Early Years is slightly different, but carry the same value.

  • Emerging: Children operating below expectations, just beginning to grasp their new learning.
  • Expected: Children working within expectations for the year group.
  • Exceeding: Children working beyond expectations for the year group.

Please see poster below for our approach to assessment without levels.

  • Emerging: Children operating below expectations, just beginning to grasp their new learning.
  • Secure: Children working within expectations for the year group.
  • Advanced: Children working beyond expectations for the year group.
  • Mastery: Children demonstrating understanding by using and applying their knowledge in different contexts.
